Development Companies Skip Checks on Codes from External Sources The ever-increasing need to be more competitive is driving development companies to rely on third-party vendors and outsourced providers for the code they use to create their software. A new study shows that while this trend may effectively save money during the development process, it causes customer relations to suffer in the long run. This particular finding solidifies the argument that thorough software quality assurance testing is the only way to create successful development projects that will ultimately satisfy customers. According to a May 10th article in Information Week, of the businesses surveyed, most developers assess the code that is created in-house with a manual and/or automated software testing tool. However, when it comes to the code they use in their products generated from outside sources, almost half don’t require similar checks. More specifically – the study reveals that of the 70% of the 336 development companies surveyed that run "security and vulnerability assessments of code developed in-house, only 35% require that third-party code providers do the same." The study also found that the number one way businesses measure the success of their development project is through the satisfaction of internal and external customers. In fact, 74% of respondents said this goal is their top priority. Clearly, there is a disconnect between what development companies want and the steps they will actually take to get there. In order to make these two things come together, businesses need to discover defects before they reach consumers by using software quality assurance testing tools on code that comes from external sources. |
