Minimizing Fear, Maximizing Profits

Minimizing Fear, Maximizing Profits

If 88% of companies surveyed are ready to make the switch to an automated testing tool then what is holding them back? In short: the resistance to change. According to the Kurt Lewin and Edgar Schein Change Theory, “humans seek homeostasis and equilibrium”, meaning a predictable and stable world – including their workplace. However, with the right guidance and preparation, development companies can implement an automated software testing tool without the fear and anxiety brought on by this change.

Here are some tips for making a smooth conversion:

•    Communicate openly. The only way to ease employees' uncertainty is by promoting open communication in the office, starting with management and going all the way down. Everyone should be encouraged to ask questions about the software testing tool and its widespread implications, and managers need to make these worries a priority. During the implementation process there should be regular meetings so that everyone feels included in the changes. More than ever, management should be as transparent as possible so their employees feel like they are part of the decision-making process.

•    Prioritize training. Let every employee know how their job will be affected by the new software testing tool. During the training process, uncertainty is especially high because changes are in full swing. Again, urge employees to ask questions and make sure their concerns are met with reassuring answers. Training does not end when the testing tool is up and running; rather the changes carry on until employees are well adjusted to their new roles and expectations.

•    Plan ahead. Waiting to prepare the data until the software testing tool is implemented is a costly mistake that eats away at precious time and money. It is important to be as thorough as possible because any errors in the data will create a multitude of problems – including poor test results and a longer implementation process, not to mention major headaches and anxiety. These problems only justify employees' resistance to change, so planning ahead can stop their fears from being realized.
