For those not familiar with the Pelotonia it is a charity cycling event that helps raise funds for the Comprehensive Cancer Center and James Cancer Hospital/Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University. The ride itself consists of a route, traveling from Columbus, Ohio to Athens, Ohio and back to Canal Winchester, Ohio. This is a full two-day, 180-mile route and participants can choose from a 23, 43, 102 and 180-mile route.
Last year Janova formed a “Peloton”, which is essentially a team of riders, and combined efforts to raise money for the cause. This “cause,” is a noble one where 100% of all donations raised by Pelotonia riders go directly to support cancer research. In 2010, the Janova Peloton raised $17,775 and had 12 riders! This year we hope to exceed that amount through recruitment of more riders and additional fundraising efforts.
Last week Pelotonia’s Executive Director, Tom Lennox and Director of Rider Recruitment, Susie Schueller, came to speak to Janova about being more involved with Pelotonia 2011. The entire Janova Staff wore new co-branded Janova and Pelotonia T-shirts, while Tom discussed the event and explained the impact everyone can make by participating in the ride this year.
Janova’s involvement with the Pelotonia is not uncommon in central Ohio. Last year, over 4,000 riders participated in the event raising over $7.8 Million for Cancer Research. It is amazing to see a community support a cause in such a short amount of time with 2011 being only the third year for the event! With the support of the business community as well as individuals, this event will continue to be a success.
As for Janova, we are planning to host additional fundraisers throughout the spring and summer and are hoping to recruit several more riders to the Peloton. Additionally, we will be hosting several training rides in the New Albany area and considering one along the “hilly” portions of the Pelotonia route.
